As millennials, we are part of a generation reshaping the world of work. We have more opportunities, challenges, and choices than ever before. However, that often contrasts with facing more uncertainty, competition, and stress in our workplaces. COVID-19 and workplace movements like the Great Resignation and Quitting have not helped either.
Our careers are one of the areas where we face the most resistance as we get older. If you have ever wondered how you can make the most of your career and achieve your goals before you turn 40, then keep reading. In this blog post, I’ll share three career moves that all millennials should make before turning 40.
1. Build Your Network
It is a cliche because it is true; our network impacts our net worth. The people we know and are associated with can help us find new opportunities, learn new skills, get feedback, and access resources.

Networking has evolved from exchanging business cards or adding contacts on LinkedIn to aligning yourself and building genuine relationships with people who share your values, interests, and aspirations.
Social media is often touted as a place for drama and wasting time, but if used wisely, it can be a valuable resource for building an authentic, collaborative network.
Reach out to people who inspire you, offer your help or expertise, and follow up regularly. Attend events, join online communities, and participate in discussions in Facebook groups and Linkedin. Also, don’t forget to nurture your existing connections and show your appreciation.

2. Invest in yourself
Our career is an asset. It provides us with income, satisfaction, and fulfilment. But let’s be real: It can also become stagnant, dull, or even obsolete if we don’t invest in improving ourselves.
When was the last time you took a course, bought a book or took a coaching session to improve your skills, knowledge, and mindset?
As we increase our competence in various areas, our confidence and sense of clarity about what we love to do and are very good at also increases.

A great place to start is to set clear goals. Decide how much you want to invest and the expected outcome of that investment. Our journeys are all different, so prioritising your needs is important here.
And don’t forget to celebrate your achievements and reward yourself.
3. Embrace Change

Change is inevitable; change itself is the only thing that does not change.
Depending on the change, it can be exciting, scary, or both. Personally, I carry the mantra, Growth demands change, and so as a growth-oriented individual, change is my best friend i
Embracing change can help us develop an open mind towards new ideas, activate our creativity, and build resilience in the face of unexpected challenges. Pursuing an exciting and fulfilling life requires persistence and a willingness to keep trying, despite setbacks.
As with anything else, any positive change has to start with an internal decision to see it as positive. Life can be life-ing, and sometimes the changes in our careers can be unexpected; when that happens, I’ve found that having a solid support system and a growth mindset is essential to truly embrace change.
And that’s it; those are just some of the moves all millennials should be making in their careers as we enjoy the journey of this fascinating life and have fun getting to age 40.
