3 Ways Millennials Can Change Work Culture for the Better

There’s strength in numbers.  At present, Millennials are the largest generation in the workforce and so we have the potential to make changes that could positively impact work culture for generations to come. Here are three ways millennials can change work culture for the better:

1. Embrace Diversity and Inclusion

Millennials are the most diverse generation in history.  Unlike previous generations, we value diversity and inclusion in the workplace.

We are more likely to work with people from different backgrounds, cultures, genders, and orientations, and we respect different perspectives and opinions.

By embracing diversity and inclusion, millennials can foster a work culture that is more open, tolerant, and collaborative.

2. Promote Work-Life Balance

Unlike former generations, most Millennials are far less interested in sacrificing their personal lives for their careers.  We will work long hours on our passion projects but the tendency of earlier generations to slave away doing work that is not meaningful or related to us serving or self-actualizing…. is a hard pass.

We value work-life balance and seek flexibility and autonomy in our work schedules.  We work to enjoy experiences like travel instead of accumulating things that traditionally represented doing well like houses, job titles, corner offices and cars.

We also prioritize our health and well-being, and we want to work for employers who support us in achieving their goals. Terms like ‘toxic workplaces’ originated with our generation as a way of putting language to and calling out unhealthy workplace practices that existed for years.

By promoting work-life balance, millennials can create a work culture that is more productive, healthy, and happy.

3. Innovate and Adapt

Millennials are digital natives, and we are comfortable with using technology and social media in our work.

We are also creative, curious, and eager to learn new skills and explore new opportunities.

We are less afraid of change or failure than persons from previous generations and we are wildly innovative.  From relationships to careers, we are always willing to experiment with new ways to do old things.

By innovating and adapting, millennials can drive a work culture that is more dynamic, agile, competitive and collaborative.

These are just some of the ways millennials can change work culture for the better. If you want to learn more about how millennials are shaping the future of work, you should listen to the 5 Years to Forty podcast
