Millennials are often seen as the generation that values work-life balance more than any other. We want to have fulfilling careers, but also enjoy our personal lives and hobbies.

Achieving this balance, especially in today’s fast-paced and competitive world can be difficult.
So…How can millennials create more work-life balance by age 40? Let’s look at three possible ways:
1. Set clear boundaries and priorities

One of the main challenges that millennials face is the blurring of boundaries between work and life. With technology and remote work, it is easy to be always connected and available for work-related tasks. At the same time, all of this access opens up the door to things like burnout, stress, and reduced productivity.
To avoid this, we millennials need to set clear boundaries and priorities for ourselves and communicate these kindly to others. We know time is one of the hardest assets to manage as an adult. This makes it all the more important to have boundaries and set priorities on what we will do, delegate, outsource or completely forget about. Of course, tools like calendars, timers, and do-not-disturb modes to manage our time and minimize distractions are timeless.
Whichever one of these options, by setting clear boundaries and priorities we absolutely can create more space and time for our personal lives and hobbies.
2. Seek flexibility and autonomy

Another way that millennials can create more work-life balance is by seeking flexibility and autonomy in their work arrangements.
Flexibility means having the ability to choose when, where, and how to work, while autonomy means having the freedom to make decisions and control one’s own work.
Research has shown that flexibility and autonomy can increase job satisfaction, motivation, performance, and well-being.
Depending on the job you have and the organisational culture that exists where you work, standards of flexibility and autonomy can vary. But that does not mean it cannot be established. We start the conversation with your employers or clients, or if necessary, even pursue alternative work options like freelancing, entrepreneurship, or part-time work. By seeking flexibility and autonomy, we can have more control over our work-life balance in a manner that aligns with our work values and goals.
3. Invest in self-care and personal growth

A third way that millennials can create more work-life balance is by investing in self-care and personal growth.
Self-care means taking care of one’s physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual health, while personal growth means developing one’s skills, knowledge, interests, and passions. Both self-care and personal growth can enhance one’s well-being, happiness, resilience, and creativity. As Millennials we can invest in self-care and personal growth by doing activities like exercising, meditating, reading, learning new things, traveling, volunteering, or pursuing hobbies. I recently started lifting free weights and boy…. it’s been a challenge. But I am already seeing and feeling the results. Groceries are easier to carry and the hip pain that usually bugs me is far less severe.
By investing in self-care and personal growth, millennials can enrich their lives and achieve more balance.
Conclusion
Work-life balance is not a one-size-fits-all concept. It depends on one’s preferences, circumstances, and goals. However, by following these three ways – setting clear boundaries and priorities, seeking flexibility and autonomy, and investing in self-care and personal growth – millennials can create more work-life balance by age 40.
