5 Fun New Year Resolutions for Millennials to Try in 2024

Millennials are often accused of being too serious, stressed, and cynical. Despite the challenges and pressures in our personal and professional lives, we sometimes forget to have fun and enjoy the moment.

But having fun is good not only for your mood but also for your health, your creativity, and your relationships.

This year, I’ve decided to be intentional about being happy. I’m committing and recommitting to things that make me feel good, like making coffee slowly, chatting with my daughter before bed, doing yoga daily and listening to more soca music.

Are you thinking about fun resolutions to spice up your life and make you happier? Here are five suggestions that you can try in 2024.

1. Learn something new and weird

Learning new things is always beneficial, but it can also be fun, especially if you choose something out of your comfort zone or that sparks your curiosity.

You can learn a new language, a new skill, a new hobby, or a new subject. The possibilities are endless, but here are some examples of weird and fun things you can learn in 2024:

  • How to play the guitar (I know someone who can help with that if you are in Grenada)
  • How to do magic tricks – which is a great way to meet new people
  • How to apply makeup
  • How to brew your own beer or blend your own coffee
  • How to speak Mandarin with an app like duolingo

2. Travel to a random destination

Travelling is one of the best ways to have fun, explore new cultures, and broaden your horizons. But instead of planning your trips in advance, why not add spontaneity and adventure to your travel plans?

You can use a random generator, a map, or a dart to pick a destination, and then book a flight, a train, or a bus to go there.

You can also use apps like Pack Up + Go or Surprise Me that will plan a surprise trip for you based on your budget and preferences. You might end up in a place you never thought of visiting, but that will surprise you in a good way.

Additionally, you can join a travel group or attend a retreat at a special destination. Retreats are a beautiful way to connect to others, even while restoring yourself.

3. Do something that scares you

Fear is one of the biggest obstacles to having fun and living fully. Fear can hold you back from trying new things, taking risks, or expressing yourself.

But fear can also be a great motivator and a source of excitement. By doing something that scares you, you can overcome your fears, boost your confidence, and have a lot of fun.

Of course, you don’t have to do something extreme or dangerous, but something that challenges you and pushes you out of your comfort zone. Here are some examples of things you can do that scare you in 2024:

  • Go zip-lining
  • Sing karaoke, do stand-up comedy, or join an improv class
  • Ask someone out, confess your feelings, or propose
  • Quit your job, start a business, or change careers.
  • Speak in public, join a debate, or pitch an idea.

4. Make new friends or reconnect with old ones

Friends are one of life’s most important sources of fun and happiness. They can make you laugh, support, inspire, and share your joys and sorrows.

But sometimes, life gets in the way, and you lose touch with your friends, or you find it hard to make new ones. Personally, a combination of studying, COVID-19 and job and parenting commitments took a toll on my social life and connection with my long-standing friends.

That’s why, in 2024, I’m resolving to reconnect with old friends and make new ones.

If you feel like your friend circle has thinned out, do not despair. You can use social media, apps, or websites to find your old friends or to meet new people who share your interests, hobbies, or passions.

You can also join clubs like Toastmasters International, empowerment groups like the She Win Society, or events where you can mingle with like-minded people. You never know who you might meet and what fun adventures you might have together.

5. Have more fun in your everyday life

Having fun doesn’t have to be reserved for special occasions, holidays, or weekends. You can have fun in your everyday life by adding humour, creativity, and playfulness to your routine. You can do things like:

  • Watch a funny movie, show, or video.
  • Listen to upbeat music, podcasts, or audiobooks.
  • Play games, puzzles, or quizzes.
  • Read a comic book, a joke book, or a funny blog
  • Wear something colorful, quirky, or funny
  • Decorate your home, office, or car with fun or inspirational items.
  • Cook something new, exotic, or delicious.

As the famous quote says, “Don’t take life too seriously. You’ll never get out of it alive.”1 So, in 2024, make a resolution to have more fun, and you’ll see how your life will change for the better. Happy New Year! 🎉
